September 2011
The 1001 Malam is one of several small hotels and guesthouses in the area near Yogyakarta's main Tugu Train Station. This can be a very handy area to stay in, close to the sights and with a number of dining options. The big drawback is part of what makes it handy: proximity to the train station. You'll hear the whistle of every train that departs the station, which at least once an hour in the day time. Oh, and you're also right under the flight path for planes landing at the airport.
If the possible noise factor doesn't rule the location out, as it would for some people, the 1001 Malam is not a bad choice for budget accommodation. The small hotel has rather basic rooms and facilities, but it's comfortable enough for a few nights. My room had air conditioning and a fan, a shower with hot water and a sort of wicker closet. On the balcony outside the room there was a table with two chairs that was good enough for working on my laptop using the hotel's free wi-fi. There was no television.
The 1001 Malam doesn't have a real restaurant. For breakfast, you order what you want from a menu of half a dozen choices and they send it to your room. They also provide free tea and coffee for all guests, which is a nice touch. There are several restaurants on the small alley where the hotel is located.
Hotel facilities none.
Rooms feature air conditioning (optional), fan, hot and cold water and free wireless Internet access.
Pluses: Excellent location in Yogyakarta.
Minuses: Noisy area, no restaurant, no parking.
