The intersection of Orchard and Scotts Roads must be one of the busiest shopping areas in Singapore, if not the world. To get there, the best way is to use the subway to the Orchard station. That is, unless you're staying at one of the many hotels that are clustered around this same intersection.
Since Singapore is less than 100 miles from the equator, it's going to be hot no matter when you go, so here's a good thing to know to help you keep your cool while shopping: Most of the buildings around the Orchard and Scotts roads intersection are linked by underground passages fanning out from the MRT station. To get from one building to the other, head down to the basement level and look for signs directing you to the next building.
One tunnel leads from the station to Wisma Atria, housing the Isetan department store and many designer shops; then on to Ngee Ann City, home to the Takishimaya department store and more designer shops; and from there under Orchard Road to Lucky Plaza. Another tunnel from the station goes directly under Orchard Road to the C.K. Tang department store; then runs under Scotts Road to Shaw Center, home to another branch of Isetan; and then back under Orchard to Wheelock Place, where you'll find a Borders book store.
Whatever you do, don't skip Lucky Plaza. This is practically the grand dame of the Orchard shopping area. It doesn't have the sparkle or big department stores of its newer neighbors, but inside you'll find several shops selling nothing but perfume and cologne at knock-down prices. They have just about every brand you can name, and most likely several you've never heard of. Lucky Plaza is also a good place to look for watches, jewelry and trinkets.
