Mactan Island

Mactan is a large island separated from Cebu City by a narrow channel. It is, technically, not part of Cebu City but considered a part of metro Cebu. The largest city on the island is Lapu-Lapu. The island is where the “Cebu” airport is located. Additionally, it is home to many beach resorts. If you're just passing through Cebu for a few days, chances are you'll want to stay on the island rather than in the city.

History

Mactan has a special place in Philippine history. It was here, according to tradition, that the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, in 1521, tried to convert the locals to Chrstianity and bring them under the rule of Sugbu (now Cebu City). The ruler of Mactan, Lapu-Lapu, refused and Magellan was killed in the resulting battle. Thus, Mactan is consdered the start of over 400 years of reistance to colonization, and Datu (king) Lapu-Lapu is the first freedom fighter.

Getting There and Getting Around

As mentioned, the island is home to the metro area's main airport. You'll most likely need to use a taxi to get around, or use the country's primary ride hailing service, Grab.

Where to Stay

There are beach resorts all along the eastern coast of the island, in all price ranges. Most of the major chains have branches on the island from the top rated Shangri-La to more mid-price hotels like Mercure. If you want a slightly more urban experience, with several shops and restaurant options along a wide boulevard, check out the Mactan Newtown area, which is still only a few blocks from the ocean. Hotels in this area have a private beach area nearby, so you're not giving up much staying in this area.

Sights

There aren't too many sights in Mactan away from the sea front. Perhaps the most significant place is the historical marker where the battle between Lapu-Lapu's warriors fought against Magellan's forces. It is near Mactan Newtown so a visit to the monument can be combined with lunch at one of the cafes along the street.

At the beach, most of the standard options are available, such as jet skis and parasailing. There are also some great dive sites just off the coast, as well as Olango island just off Mactan's coast. Most dive sites are within 10 to 20 minutes from whichever dive shop you choose.
