Hotel Penaga
In recent years, a number of old buildings and mansions in the historic area of Georgetown have been converted into small 'boutique' hotels. There are options in just about every price range to choose from. What I've listed here are the ones that will appeal to travelers desiring full hotel type rooms, with private baths and most of the modern conveniences. There are, of course, many many more cheap options for those willing to forgo the mod-cons.
- Banana Boutique Hotel
- One of the cheaper options in the old-town area. You get what you pay for, but the hotel is certainly comfortable enough.
- Yeng Keng Hotel
- The Yeng Keng occupies a building very similar to the Banana Boutique Hotel, which is just a block or so away, but the decoration and fittings are much more oppulent.
- Hotel Penaga
- Hotel Penaga is right on the edge of the buffer zone for the historic area. As such, it's probably a little more accessible and has had a little more freedom to adapt the structure to accommodate all the modern conveniences.
- Straits Collection
- Run by a commercial preservation group, the Straits Collection offers a small number of converted shop-houses for rent. The conversion has been rather minimal, so the result is certainly distinctive but may not be for everyone.
- Chulia Heritage Hotel
- One of the cheaper options in the boutique class. Note that the cheapest rooms have shared bathrooms. For rooms with private baths, the Banana Boutique is probably cheaper.
- 1881 Chong Tian Hotel
- Opened in late 2011, this is one of the newest - and most expensive - hotels in the preservation area. It certainly looks posh, but with listed rates of $400 a night and up, I'm not sure it's worth it, even though the rooms are huge. Check the discount booking sites listed below to find a good deal.
