The History & Ethnography Museum is housed in the old Dutch Stadthuys on Melaka's town square. The museum displays and recounts the history of Melaka, from its founding by a Sumatran prince through the colonial area and independence. There are a number of relics showing the rich multi-cultural tradition of the city-state, such as Chinese blue-and-white ceramics with Arabic decorations.
The building itself is of course an interesting object in itself. The main hall sports a beautiful beamed ceiling, as do many of the side rooms. The galleries cover the history of Melaka in order, from its founding by the exiled Prince Parameswara through to modern times. The upper floors focus on modern history surrounding the fight for independence after World War II. In the courtyard, there is a statue of Cheng Ho, the Chinese admiral/diplomat who figures prominently in Melaka's history.
The museum is open daily from 9:00 to 5:30. Admission is RM 5.00 (1.02 USD). If you follow the arrows, you'll end up at the back of the museum, from where a path leads to the Literature Museum.
