Baba House Hotel

July 2010

The Baba House Hotel occupies four remodeled shophouses in Melaka's historic Chinatown area, which makes it very convenient for exploring all the sights of the city. The transformation to a hotel retained all the essential features of the old buildings, including the light wells. The rooms are somewhat small, and furnished in a way fitting with the era of the buildins. This includes such touches as using a Chinese-style Victorian era porcelain washbasin for a sink.

Rooms are somewhat small, and I understand that some do not have windows. My room had a small window into a light well. Furniture included a double bed, desk, wardrobe and television stand. Free wi-fi Internet access was available in the room. The room was comfortable enough, although I found the pillows too soft. They were the cheap foam variety. Although the rainshower head was nice, it was poorly fitted. I managed to partially fix it myself, but it still needed proper maintenance.

Breakfast was served in the hotel restaurant, which was very like a "greasy spoon" diner. The fixed menu consisted of some scrambled eggs, sausages and two slices of toast, plus all the orange juice and coffee or tea you could help yourself to.

Hotel Facilities include a restaurant and massage service.

Rooms feature a television (local Malay channels only), wi-fi Internet access and air conditioning.

Pluses: Very good location near the heart of Melaka's Chinatown, within walking distance of many sights and restaurants. The staff were quite friendly and helpful.

Minuses: The hotel is not fancy, and maintenance is not at its best. No English language television channels.
