Getting Around

Getting around Penang is relatively easy. If you choose one of the many hotels in or on the edge of the Georgetown preservation area, then you can easily explore the old town on foot. There are also several shops around town that will rent bicycles or motorcycles if walking doesn't appeal.

For destinations further afield, taxis are plentiful and cheap. They are all metered, and haggling is supposed to be banned (which doesn't mean it doesn't happen). However, Penang does have an modern, efficient bus system that can get you from Georgetown to most of the major tourist areas for under 3 Ringgit. Most buses leave from the ferry dock at Weld Quay and can take you to Batu Feringghi, Gurney Plaza, and Penang Hill. For information on routes and fares, see the Rapid Penang web site.
