While many may view a vacation in Bali as the ideal opportunity to just lie on the beach and soak up some sun, there is much more to do on Bali than just sit in the sun. In fact, that is probably one of its greatest attractions. If you do want to get off the beach, here's an overview of what you can get up to.
Surfing
Surfing is by far the number one activity around South Bali. The beaches around Kuta-Legian are best suited to beginners, and lessons are available along with equipment rental from several outlets along the beach. More experienced surfers prefer the beaches around Suluban beach or Ulu Watu.
Diving
Given Bali's reputation for surfing, many people are surprised to hear that the island also has some great dive sites. After all, the geography that makes for great surfing generally makes for bad diving. But it's all a matter of which "side" of Bali you're on. The southwestern face of the island is where all the great surfing sites are, as well as the tourist hordes, while on the northeastern side you'll find calm waters filled with fantastic corals. See our related site, the SEA Undersea Guide for a complete run-down on Bali scuba diving.
Hiking & Nature Walks
The area around Ubud contains some great places for an afternoon walk in nature. The most popular is probably the Monkey Forest Sanctuary at the south end of Monkey Forest Road. If you're a bird watcher, a walk around here is not to be missed.
White-Water Rafting
To really enjoy the lush tropical scenery around Ubud, try joining a white-water rafting trip. Okay, I can see you guys going "White-water rafting? Bali?" Its a combination that comes about as readily to mind as snow skiing and Los Angeles. But it definitely is an option for those seeking a bit of adventure, and couldn't be easier to arrange.
There are a few operators to choose from. We highly recommend Sobek Bali, which also offers bike and jeep tours. You can book a trip from just about any of the many travel agents around Ubud. The operator will usually pick you up at your hotel and take you to the starting point.
