Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge, Moni

Date of stay: September 2010

Opened in July of 2010, Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge is part of a small chain of Indonesian 'eco' lodges promoting sustainable community-based tourism and environmental best practices. The lodge is sited on a stream facing rice terraces just outside of Moni. Although opened almost two months before my stay, the ten-room hotel was still not fully complete. There are five twin / double villas and five twin / double rooms above the restaurant.

I had one of the villas for my stay. While the first impression was quite nice, the number of flaws - some quite major - continued to mount up. We arrived after a long drive from Maumere in the middle of a prolonged rainstorm, to find that there was no way to sit on the toilet in the outdoor bathroom without getting wet. This was not, unfortunately, the biggest flaw the room had. We returned from dinner to find our room full of moths and other insects. It turned out there was no screening between the roof rafters, leaving big open gaps between the top of the wall and the roof, letting in everything that could fly. To make this even worse, there were no mosquito nets provided (and no way to hang one up if you bought your own). Presumably, this and other flaws - like missing lights and fans - may be fixed eventually, since it was obvious the resort is still under construction.

There are no restaurants nearby, so you will probably end up eating your meals at the hotel. Soon after we checked in, a lady came to our room to take our orders for dinner, although she didn't have a menu. While the hotel was only opened a couple of months, apparently they were already re-working their menu. We ended up ordering some simple Indonesian dishes, which were quite good, as was the breakfast the following morning. Once again, there was no menu and the only thing on offer seemed to be banana pancakes.

Hotel facilities include one restaurant.

Rooms feature in-room safe.

Pluses: Convenient location; nice setting.

Minuses: Very poorly designed rooms, that were incomplete on our stay.
