Today’s photo is one of those happy accidents. I was just trying to get a photo of the gateway with the soaring spires of the pagodas beyond when this monk walked by, looking intently at his mobile phone.
You know, when I first came to work in Thailand, a very, very, very, very long time ago, I read up on Thai culture. The sections of books I read on Thais and the monk-hood all mentioned that monks were restricted to just a few essential possessions, like a robe, sandals, umbrella, begging bowl, etc. I don’t remember ‘mobile phone’ being one of them.
