Bangkok is big city, where you can find restaurants offering just about any cuisine you can name, but it’s been without a place where you can get an authentic bagel. There have been a few places around town where you could get a "bagel" but for true connoisseurs these weren’t good enough, so a couple of them decided to open a bakery making real New York style bagels. Their shop officially opened on March 1st.
Verrazano Bagel at BKK Bagel Bakery
BKK Bagel Bakery is a small café in Maneeya Plaza. They offer several kinds of bagels, such as plain, poppy seed, sesame and cinnamon raisin. They also have a variety of basic toppings as well as a selection of sandwiches, or you can create your own. I opted for one of the suggested bagel sandwiches, the "Verrazano", which had spicy roast beef, Swiss cheese, mustard and all the trimmings.
The bagel – the important part – was dense and chewy, as real bagels should be. The other ingredients were all good quality. It’s a bit pricey for a good sandwich, but it’s not too expensive to be unreasonable, and since there’s really no option for a good bagel it’s acceptable for an occasional treat.
Since the bakery just opened, it’s probably too early to tell if it will really catch on, expand and improve, although business looked very good while I was there. BKK Bagel Bakery is located on the ground floor of Maneeya Plaza, facing the walkway that leads from Ploenchit Road to the Renaissance hotel. The café is open weekdays from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm for bagel sales only. Closed on Sunday. See the BKK Bagel Bakery web site for additional information.
